Over the years, we’ve seen a significant increase in the number of customers who aim to meet strict environmental and sourcing requirements. In many cases, this is prompted by an intention to sell into regulated markets like the European Union, but it’s also sometimes a matter of the customer’s individual standards. At GTR Manufacturing, we’ll work with you to support your efforts to meet standards like RoHS, REACH compliance, conflict minerals, DFARS, and more.
Supporting Requirements for the European Union
We’ve seen a notable increase in requests tied to two EU compliance standards:
- REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is an EU regulation designed to protect human health and the environment by restricting the use of certain chemicals in products.
- RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) is an EU directive that limits the use of ten substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
Our customers often work within global networks, so compliance with these standards helps ensure products can be sold or used in the EU. Fortunately, the majority of materials and processes used at GTR naturally align with the requirements of REACH, and we are RoHS-compliant.
When customers require formal reporting, they often connect us with their partner reporting agency to complete various regulatory requirements. We can review the bill of materials and analyze regulated substances. If necessary, we will always identify exceptions or suggest alternatives.
We know that for REACH and RoHS, reporting agencies and customer compliance systems are critical, and we do everything we can to ensure your parts move through approvals smoothly.
Conflict Minerals
In addition to environmental compliance, many customers also ask for responsible sourcing practices aligned with U.S. Conflict Minerals regulations under the Dodd-Frank Act. These regulations focus on four minerals associated with armed conflict in some supply chains: tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold. Some customers go further with extended conflict-minerals requirements that may also include materials like cobalt, mica, and more.
We strategically build a vendor network for our custom metal manufacturing to ensure we have a variety of suppliers for conflict-free metal. In most cases, our parts naturally qualify because of the materials used, although electromechanical assembly can sometimes require deeper discussion.
DFARS and Beyond
No matter what you need, we are ready to do the due diligence to support you. At GTR, we aren’t looking to cut corners, and we take compliance and documentation seriously. We believe in environmental responsibility and ethically sourced materials, and we’ll work with you to determine how we can help meet the requirements you need.
