Aluminum Prototyping Machining
Aluminum is a versatile choice for prototypes that require a balance of strength, low weight, corrosion resistance, and manufacturability. GTR Manufacturing provides aluminum prototype machining and sheet metal prototyping capabilities to help customers turn designs into accurate, functional parts.
With CNC machining and sheet metal fabrication capabilities under one roof, GTR can help determine the right material and manufacturing process based on your prototype’s design, function, and performance requirements.
Aluminum Prototype Fabrication with 5052 and 6061
Two of the most common aluminum alloys for prototyping are 5052 and 6061-T6. Both provide good corrosion resistance and strength, but their different characteristics make each better suited to certain manufacturing processes and applications.
5052 aluminum is an excellent choice for aluminum prototype fabrication involving sheet metal. It offers excellent formability and weldability, making it particularly useful for parts that require bending, forming, or welded construction. Its corrosion resistance also makes it suitable for components that may encounter demanding environmental conditions.
6061-T6 aluminum offers greater strength and excellent machinability. It is commonly used for CNC-machined components, while its lower formability can make it less suitable than 5052 for parts requiring significant bending.

Aluminum Prototype Machining & Fabrication at GTR
Successful aluminum prototyping involves more than choosing an alloy. The material, geometry, tolerances, forming requirements, finish, and end use can all influence how a prototype should be manufactured.
GTR brings multiple capabilities together to simplify that process. Depending on the design, your aluminum prototype can move through sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, metal finishing, and assembly without relying on multiple manufacturing partners.
Keeping these capabilities together gives GTR greater oversight as a prototype progresses from raw material to finished component and provides customers with a single source for increasingly complex prototype requirements.

Aluminum Prototyping FAQs
What aluminum is best for prototyping?
The best alloy depends on how the prototype will be manufactured and used. GTR typically recommends 5052 for sheet metal parts requiring forming and bending, while 6061-T6 is particularly well suited for aluminum prototype machining because of its strength and excellent machinability.
What is the difference between 5052 and 6061 aluminum for prototypes?
5052 offers excellent formability, weldability, and corrosion resistance, making it a strong choice for fabricated sheet metal prototypes. 6061-T6 provides greater strength and machinability but has lower formability, making it better suited to many CNC-machined prototypes.
What aluminum thicknesses does GTR stock for prototyping?
GTR’s standard prototype materials include 5052 aluminum from 0.032″ through 0.125″ thick and 6061-T6 flat material in 0.040″, 0.062″, and 0.080″ thicknesses. Other materials can also be sourced based on project requirements.
Can GTR both machine and fabricate aluminum prototypes?
Yes. GTR provides CNC machining as well as sheet metal prototyping and fabrication capabilities, allowing the manufacturing approach to be matched to the requirements of the aluminum part. Additional finishing and assembly capabilities are also available through GTR.
Can GTR help me choose an aluminum alloy for my prototype?
Yes. If you’re unsure whether your design requires 5052, 6061-T6, or another material, GTR can review the requirements of your part and help identify an appropriate alloy.
